The iPrEx study found that the daily use of Truvada provides 44% additional protection against HIV infection when used in combination with a comprehensive package of HIV prevention interventions that include risk reduction counseling, the provision of condoms, management of sexually transmitted infections and routine HIV testing.
Other two clinical trials have also proved that Truvada works in preventing the acquisition of HIV in other populations; the Partners PrEP study in serodiscordant couples (where one member is HIV positive and the other is HIV negative) and the TDF2 study in heterosexual men and women at risk of acquiring HIV. One other trial, FEM PrEP was stopped because it was not going to be able to demonstrate the efficacy of Truvada.
